Introduction

Cybersecurity is a global concern, particularly in rapidly developing countries like Kenya. Kenya’s ICT revolution followed the laying of undersea cables in 2009 for faster internet (Fiber Optic). The growth of internet usage in Kenya therefore, has been facilitated by high proliferation and adoption of mobile communications that in effect has exposed the Kenyan public and enterprises to unprecedented security threats via mobile platform. The trends of cybersecurity threats are unprecedented and require immediate solutions to improve public awareness and promote proactive defense. Without addressing the cyber concerns, the core aims of advance in technology and communications will be adversely affected or derailed.

The greatest concern among others is Kenya’s mobile banking services offered by Safaricom Kenya which was lounged in 2007 to allow Kenyans to transfer money electronically through MPESA services. This technology has led to increased use and dependence on the internet and has exposed the Kenyan public to a variety of threats including; mobile malware, identity theft, fraud, data theft, fishing attacks, data breaches, and money laundering scams.

Many of these threats/attacks can be prevented by combination of technology solutions, people, and control processes. Kenya’s cybersecurity institutions and government agencies, therefore, must take the lead in visionary and strategic cyber security solutions for the future.
